IEEE GOLD Sundowner December 2006 – Grape Skin Bar in Northbridge

: 5 2007
: By David Lim

IEEE GOLD ended the year that was 2006 with a rendition of one of its most popular event, the after work sundowner on a Friday evening. What better way was to end the working week with a casual drink at the local pub/bar – whether it is reacquainting with old friends or meeting someone new?

The Sundowner was truly a success, it was held at the Grape Skin Wine bar, adjacent to the Brass Monkey, in Northbridge. The offer of a free drink to members and the circulation of tasty food platters made it a little more enticing to attend.  People begun to gathered from 6pm onwards attracting a good sized crowd of thirty plus patrons. The diversity of the audience was profound with a mix of working professionals, students and academics.

Another distinction that IEEE GOLD has continued to emphasised, when compared to its counterparts, is the extension of invitation to both IEEE members and non-members thus attracting a mixture of professionals instead of predominantly engineers. This factor alone in essence is very important to GOLD’s emphasis when coordinating events, as Perth is a relatively small city and it won’t be too long before working engineers are able to make acquaintance with their peers in the industry within a short period of time – simply said Perth is just too small. This event was attended by accountants, software developers, IT professionals, engineers, business consultants, students, university academics and retail specialists.

For professionals in Perth there is no doubt an importance to have a network of acquaintances working in different industries whether this is for potential business opportunities, friendship and/or professional development – after all isn’t it common for one to hear the phrase “it isn’t what you know, its who you know”.

The GOLD committee members has always taken upon itself to make all our guests feel welcome, for first timers we used this opportunity to introduce them to our committee members, attending patrons, what GOLD represents and events we plan to be hosting throughout the year – another selfless promotion on our part no doubt. For regulars to our events, GOLD has paid attention to any suggestions for new venues and themes to improve our events. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers for making this sundowner a success, and as well as to our guests. We couldn’t have accomplished such a feat without your assistance in helping us to promote it and most importantly thank you for your attendance.
